Description
Eastern Redcedar, or Latin name, Juniperus virginiana, is a tree of the prairie riparian woodland. It is a pioneer tree and can easily take over a grassland. Natural and intentional fires control the spread of the tree. I might be considered an invasive on the prairie, but is native to the riparian woodlands. The berries had medicinal properties and were used by the Native Americans.
